Irish Pub "Wheels"
Address: 16 Akhvlediani Str, Tbilisi
Tel: 98 87 33
Prologue: Peculiarities of national beer drinking. Why drink beer in Tbilisi? Well, there are several reasons for that: first and foremost, it's a relief when you have a hangover and more importantly, it helps to fight the post-hangover "bad vibes" - peculiar Georgian beer toasts are a perfect example of that. The tradition is old and it's hard to tell where it origins from but clearly, it's a remedy for any kind of malice.
The plot: Old Perovskaya and new Akhveldiani street. Sign - WHEELS, opened in 1996 it gained Grolsch (premium Dutch lager) Oscar already in 1997. Wooden wheel, brick stairs and you're here!
Wow! Situation is nice. First thing I notice is the ancient, black typewriter, how I wish to be a writer or a poet from XVIII century and type on this machine from sunrise to sundown.
Wooden tables, wooden bar, TV on top of the bar, two big wooden wheels on the ceiling with old lamps hanging. The lamp reminds of the waggon wheel. Firewood is crackling in the brick fireplace in the corner, black trunk is placed next to it (wonder what's inside). Above the fireplace garlic, saffron and maize bundles are hanging. Old lantern and the photos of the Manager's ancestors on the walls make it look even more familiar and family-like - it reminds me of my grandparents... If not the advertisements of popular lager producers and lots of different alcoholic drinks in eye-catching bottling I would think it's my grandpa's wine cellar.
In the "Wheels" they definitely know how to create a cozy, comfortable atmosphere for guests and serve them with exquisite Georgian and European dishes, tasty Ravioli/Pelmeni/ in a pot (dry, cheese, mushroom), drought beer (German - Bitburger, Erdinger (unfiltered wheat beer), Irish - Guinness, Harp, Kilkenny) and bottled beer (Check - Budweiser, Dutch - Grolsch, German - Becks, Mexican - Corona, Belgian - Stella). Visitors? Men of course. Also families that come to lunch, young girls and couples, and even business partners. What do they have in common? The "Wheels" and beer! They all can enjoy themselves here - chatter, argue, laugh as much as they want. I doubt they will ever get bored here.
Epilogue: They always return... So will you.
Open everyday: 13:30 - 01:00
